A frustrating end, Stanley Nwabali apologises for loss to Cote d’Ivoire

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has apologised to Nigerians for the team’s loss to Cote d’Ivoire at the finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Sunday night.

The Eagles were beaten 2-1 by the Elephants at the Alassane Quattara Olympic Stadium in Abidjan.

Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller scored to hand the trophy to the host.

Although Nwabali, 27, made a couple of saves for the team, an overall underwhelming performance from the Eagles ensured that the Elephants won their third AFCON title.

Nwabali shared photos of himself on social media in tears after the game, saying the team takes full responsibility for the defeat.

“A disappointing and frustrating end 😞. I deeply apologise to Nigerians. I was once a fan, still a fan and I understand how it feels giving you a disappointing night.

“We take full responsibility. Thanks for the whole support till the end. I love you all,” he wrote.

Nwabali, who plays for Chippa United in South Africa, was beaten to the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award by South Africa’s Ronwen Williams.
