Back home here , our royal monarchs are also making headlines stemmed from one marital scandal or the other especially in the western part of Nigeria- The Yoruba tribe
It is a well known fact in the Yoruba kingdom that the king is “second in command to the deity”. It is believed that after God comes the King and whatever he says is final irrespective of what it is. We would be looking at the scandals involved with the marriages of three famous Yoruba Kings and their Queens.
Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi & Zaynab Otiti Obanor
Zaynab Otiti Obanor formerly known as Olori Wuraola Ogunwusi was married to Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi in 2015 and their marriage lasted for 17 months before a divorce was finalized in August 2017.
Allegations of infidelity were made against the former Queen who brought it to the notice of the public that if that was true then it would not have been taken lightly because according to Yoruba tradition anyone that sleeps with the wife of a king would be killed and there was no record of that happening.
It is said that the main reason behind her leaving the palace is because she no longer received adequate love and attention from the king who sometimes threatened to beat her and also the fact that she was not liked and accepted by the king’s three sisters.
The allegation of infidelity might have been the final straw which made her leave the palace.
Oluwo of Iwo land, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale & Chanel Chin
The divorce of Oba Abdulrasheed and Chanel’s marriage came as a shock to everyone as the couple who were married for four years (2015 – 2019) never ceased to amaze everyone with the obvious love and affection they had for each other. The Oluwo labelled his wife as the most beautiful queen in the universe and also gave her a crown to wear despite the disapproval from many.
The reason for their divorce was due to the fact that the Jamaican beauty did not approve of her husband having an affair with another woman. The Oluwo abandoned his wife of 18 years because Chanel Chin did not embrace polygamy. Olori Jumoke Akanbi was not officially recognized as a queen by the palace officials.
Reports had it that there was a time Chanel Chin moved out of the palace and stayed in a hotel when she found out that the king was having extra marital affairs. Though she went back but things must have fallen apart again between the king and his queen who could not bear the thought of her husband with other women as she she moved out of the palace and the king furiously declared her an ex-queen thus ending their marriage. Some sources said that she was chased out of the palace with her child with no money to take care of herself and the child.
Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi & Olori Badirat Ajoke
The very recent scandal involving Olori Badirat Ajoke and famous Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde msure made the headlines as it was allegedly rumored that they were having an affair.
During this episode , Olori Badirat Ajoke has been spitting fire and laying curses on herself to prove her innocence and loyalty to her husband.
Though a lot of people think it is the Alaafin who chased her out of the palace but the young Queen was said to have left the palace for her parents house because she was fed up of the gang up against her by the other four young Queens. Right now, no one knows the fate of their marriage.
Now would we be justified in coming to the conclusion that Yoruba royal marriages tends to be laced with drama which eventually leads to divorce?
