Super Eagles pray for Nigerians who died watching AFCON game against South Africa

Super Eagles of Nigeria have paid tributes to the four persons who lost their lives during the team’s match on Wednesday night against South Africa at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nigeria defeated South Africa 4-2 on penalties after a pulsating game of 120 minutes to head to the final.

Among the four persons who died in the heat of the game in their various locations in Nigeria were the former member of the House of Representatives, Cairo Ojougboh; and deputy bursar of Kwara State University (KWASU) in Malete, Ayuba Abdullahi.

Led by captain Ahmed Musa, the Super Eagles observed a minute silence in honour of the deceased. Defender Chidozie Awaziem also prayed for the bereaved families.

Musa said that the team would ensure they win the trophy on Sunday to honour the dead and the entire country.

A video of the moment when the team honoured the dead was posted on Instagram on Friday morning.

“A minute of silence observed by the team in honour of the lives lost in the course of the semi final match,” the post read.
